The Busiest Day of My Year

Church Secretaries have busy days – they’re called Palm Sunday, Good Friday, Easter Sunday, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, Thanksgiving Sunday, Christmas Sunday… and a lot of Sundays in between. At BBC, my busiest Sunday is Church Family Picnic Sunday (followed very closely – neck in neck – by Easter Sunday), which was today. And you know what…?

I love it.

It’s busy. I miss the worship service (and the sermon) while setting things up. I’m exhausted by the end of the day. I add stuff to next year’s list of “what to/not to do” for the picnic. And yet…

I love it.

So much leading up to the picnic: flyers, bulletins, phone calls. Lists, shopping, coordinating. (My type-A personality takes over.) More lists, phone calls for volunteers, fretting about the weather.

A note about the weather: not once has our picnic suffered from bad weather. It’s rained, yes – always about 20 minutes after the picnic ends. It’s been hot – about 20 minutes after the picnic ends. Type A fretting forgets to account for His providence.

My BFFs – the entire Johnston crew – are so amazing. Tony & Brian fire up the grill (this year, they had a real, live flamethrower), take care of the table and chairs, and are generally my go-to guys for “getting it done.” Angela J is a table angel, taking care of getting the table set up and coordinating whatever needs to be done with food. Her sons, Nick & Austin, help bring up chairs. My own boys, along with Brian’s O,
